Bands to Watch: Antonio Paul

I haven’t been impressed by a good band in quite a while. I keep encountering bands that either have no talent, no taste, or no vision so it makes writing about anything quite impossible. But just when I’m about to give up, something special comes along…. Antonio Paul. I love so many things about this band I don’t even know where to begin. First off, the songs are catchy as hell, especially “City Dreams” but…

New Supergroup: The Damned Things

In case you haven’t heard yet, members of Anthrax, Every Time I Die and Fall Out Boy have come together to form The Damned Things. ETID’s Keith Buckley is joined by FOB’s Joe Trohan and Andy Hurley and Anthrax’s Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano. With this line-up, you can somewhat accurately guess what the band sounds like: a mix of pop-punk and southern-fried metallic hardcore sprinkled with some nu-metal thrash. First single “We’ve Got A…

Chromatics – ‘Circled Sun’

I’ve praised Chromatics on various occasions so far, and as always they’ve given me another occasion to do so. Their label, Italians Do It Better are issuing an expanded/ analog remastered deluxe editions of Chromatics‘ 2006 In the City 12″, as well as my personal favorite, the 2007 full length Night Drive. According to the IDIB blog, each re-issue will feature 5 brand new tracks, one of which is the slow-dance-pop jam “Circled Sun”, which…

Kanye West vs Bon Iver – ‘Lost in The World’

I never thought Kanye West and Bon Iver can be pronounced together in a sentence, let alone a song. Seems like discrepancies and unlikely collaborations make up for a unexpectedly solid track – Lost in The World, a Kanye West production that heavily samples Justin Vernon’s 2008 eery autotune Woods. Yeah, you probably expected something like Justin spitting rhymes in the mic side by side with Kanye, but aside from it looking extremely awkward, that…

Duff McKagan’s list of 10 DO’s and DONT’s

Duff McKagan, ladies and gents, former bass player for Guns and Roses and Jane’s Addiction, currently singing with Velvet Revolver and Loaded scraped together a list of 10 things that you should and shouldn’t do if you want to make it big time in the music industry. “I must say there’s really nothing I’d chance about my story thus far. But it may be helpful if I could dispense a few dos and don’ts to…

AOL Radio Blog names “100 Worst Songs Ever”

So AOL has an internet radio station. And that station has a blog. Who knew? Or cared? Anyhow, they have recently published a list of the all-time 100 worst songs in popular music with a blurb-style explanation for each selection – that is, a dozen words per selection. While the vast, vast majority of the songs deserve to be here, I do have a few gripes about a handful of choices. Before I get to that,…

NSFW video: El Guincho – Bombay

Seems like I’ve become more and more fascinated by NSFW material (I’m not even what would one call a porn aficionado), it just seems these kind of videos manage to resuscitate the viewer and transform an insipid band in studio video recording into an exiting, engaging and wild film. Sex can do that. I know little to nothing about the Barcelona one man band El Guincho, but the video for his latest single Bombay off…

Download: Bell – ‘Dialtone’

Hailing from the snowy plains and peaks of Alaska, Olga Bell, or Bell as she goes by her stage name, is the latest electro-pop artist to come under my radar, and its signal is very, very strong. Then again, I just recently came across her music, but she’s been gaining praises and attention from the blogosphere’s finest since 2008’s self released six track “ep”. Now, expanded to a full three piece, the band is planing…

Hot Streaming: Deerhunter – ‘Halcyon Digest’

Deerhunter’s forth full length studio album will be out next Tuesday, September 28th on 4AD. Until its release date, you’ll be able to stream the whole album in its entirety via NPR.org on the stream below. I’ve played it twice so far and I find it to be incredibly atmospheric and well textured. Moody, hazy and ultimately memorable, this might just be Deerhunter’s best album to date, and most definitely the band’s most accessible record…

Elbow’s Guy Garvey condemns illegal downloaders to hell

In a recent talk with BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, Elbow frontman Guy Garvey lashed out on people who can afford to buy music, but choose to rip it, saying they’re “going to hell” for it. “If you genuinely can’t afford music then of course you’re going to rip it. If you can afford it and you don’t pay for it then you’re going to hell and you’ve got your own room. Especially when it’s a…
