Berkeley Colored Metal: An Interview With Apothesary

Apothesary in the middle of their set at 924 Gilman.

Forget the stereotypes, people. Gone are the greasy, stand-offish metal band members, and in their places come the members of Apothesary, a three-piece metal band from the East Bay Area of California (Concord). Right off the bat, the three main members of the band, Jared Eandi,  Greg O’Neill, and Clayton Cagle, were very amiable and willing to let me in to their musical…

Mastodon’s Brent Hinds in burrito commercial

Elmyr's Brent Hinds Ad

Brent Hinds doing yogo and burritos. True metal!

I don’t know if this is still an aftershock from his huge brain hemorrhage he suffered a few years back, but whatever’s the case this is god damn hilarious!  Yes, that Brent Hinds, the Mastodon guitarist, playing in a video ad for Atlanta based burrito chain Elmyr’s (Mastodon members are from Atlanta), in which they spoof pharma commercial you regularly see in Jeopardy!…

Mastodon to release a live metal nightmare to your flatscreen

I’m not sure I’ve said this before, but to me at least Mastodon is the best contemporary live metal act I’ve managed to experience. Flamboyant, mean, raw and above all AUTHENTIC! And it’s about time their label, Reprise, decided that a live DVD which brings the Mastodon experience to the drenching comfort of any self-respecting metal-head’s dwelling (is that even possible?) is to be finally released on March 13. The DVD, titled Live at The…

Soundgarden live @ Conan (‘Black Rain’ and ‘Hunted Down’)

After a series of intense reunion tour dates and a recently released platinum awarded compilation album, albeit released bundled with Guitar Hero cards, Soundgarden rocked the house last night for Coco with two great tracks off  Telephantasm. The band first started with “Black Rain”, a previously unreleased studio leftover from the Badmotorfinger sessions, after which a seemingly rehabilitated Chris Cornell and co. jumped to “Hunder Down”, the band’s first single released in 1987. Check out…

[VIDEO] The Sword – ‘Tres Brujas’

“Tres Brujas”, The Sword’s first video as part of their self-described “Post-Apocalyptic Western Trilogy” premiered earlier today and is very much everything one could have expected – blood, gadgets, samurai swords and hard rocking spacy jams in ….ermmm space! Check out the video below. Warp Riders, the new The Sword record, is out this week via Kemado Records. You can download the song here.

Soundgarden Prepare Telephantasm

Things are still a-stir in the world of Soundgarden. Now that all involved have entered a healthful middle age, they’ve cast their one good eye towards the past, and played a number of reunion shows, including what looks like an excellent set at grimly indie-fied festibule Lollapalooza. (Moderately tuneful but utterly bland British glumsters Mumford & Sons played there this year, to give you an example of how far from its freak-show-encompassing, bile-drinking-contest roots the…

Lordi’s new cover art will make your eyes bleed [click at own risk]

As if the name wasn't terrible enough...

I’m not one who takes metal too serious, but I think there’s an acceptable limit of how much piss a band can take when playing. After you cross that line the fun kinda fades away and leaves room for the lamentable, and what you’re left with is a bunch of masked clowns. I don’t mean to bash Lordi – heck, frankly, I don’t give…

Iron Maiden’s Final Frontier

Artwork for 'The Final Frontier' by long time Maiden collaborator Melvyn Grant.

Remarkably, the iconic heavy metal band Iron Maiden have reached their fifteenth full length studio effort, once with the upcoming release of the band’s latest installment “The Final Frontier” –  only one month away! I’ve only found two songs on the web (‘El Dorado” and the title track), but from what I’ve briefly sampled and read elsewhere, it’s a…

Download: The Sword – ‘Tres Brujas’

A few weeks ago I captioned the The Sword’s album art for the metal stalwarts upcoming new album “Warp Riders”. Today, the band handed their fans out an awesome treat by releasing their first single “Tres Brujas” up for free download. As expected, the track is simply killer – packed with heavy riffs, pounding drums and barely passable vocals. Also, according to the band’s most recent press release, a three part music videos series which…

The Sword’s new album art is from a universe far far away

I first saw The Sword when they opened for Metallica two years ago and they simply blew my mind away with their hypnotic blend of stoner metal and hard banging riffs. These guys know how to stimulate your psychic, I’m telling you. Covered above is the new album art for the Austinites upcoming third studio album, “Warp Riders.” Appropriately for a “psychedelic space opera” concept record, the cover, by artist Dan McPharlin, perfectly illustrates the…
