New Supergroup: The Damned Things

In case you haven’t heard yet, members of Anthrax, Every Time I Die and Fall Out Boy have come together to form The Damned Things. ETID’s Keith Buckley is joined by FOB’s Joe Trohan and Andy Hurley and Anthrax’s Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano. With this line-up, you can somewhat accurately guess what the band sounds like: a mix of pop-punk and southern-fried metallic hardcore sprinkled with some nu-metal thrash. First single “We’ve Got A…

AOL Radio Blog names “100 Worst Songs Ever”

So AOL has an internet radio station. And that station has a blog. Who knew? Or cared? Anyhow, they have recently published a list of the all-time 100 worst songs in popular music with a blurb-style explanation for each selection – that is, a dozen words per selection. While the vast, vast majority of the songs deserve to be here, I do have a few gripes about a handful of choices. Before I get to that,…

New tepid No. 1 album replaces old tepid No. 1 album

So after five weeks at number one, Eminem’s utterly bland Recovery was knocked from the Billboard’s top spot by another gray-scale release, Avenged Sevenfold’s Nightmare. The “metal” record moved 163K units to Eminem’s week six tally of 159K. I don’t know how to feel about this. On the one hand, “Not Afraid” is Em’s best single since  “Lose Yourself” but the rest of the album is pop-rap nonsense with a few lyrical gems scattered throughout….

Own Elvis’ autopsy tools

I shit you not, you can now own the medical tools used for Elvis Presley’s autopsy. The auction, which happens next month, is split into two lots. That, I must say, is a whole new level of fucked up when it comes to celebrity memorabilia. You can own the rubber gloves, the forceps and even the aneurysm hooks that (supposedly) “had postmortem contact with the singer.” Hell, you can own the fucking coffin shipping invoice…

RIAA: Suing you since 2003 (part 3)

This is a feel-good story. Trust me. A site called Recording Industry vs. The People found some numbers on the trials (and tribulations) of the RIAA’s lawsuits over the past few years. They’re quite entertaining – if you’re not with the RIAA, of course. In 2008, the RIAA has spend $16 million on attorney fees to recover $390,000. Even worse, the year prior they spend $21M on lawyer fees plus an additional $3.5M on “investigative…

The Darkness to reform [Update 7/6]

Former Darkness lead singer/guitarist Justin Hawkins blah blah ends feud with his brother and Darkness guitarist Chris – something about a child being born and family. Yada Yada, whatever. The details aren’t really all that important because… THE FUCKING DARKNESS ARE GETTING BACK TOGETHER! Fuck and yes. That is all. Update: So apparently, according to Justin this news is “hilariously wrong.” Dammit.

41 years later, Zeppelin sued over “Dazed and Confused”

You read that right. Led Zeppelin released its debut 41.5 years ago, along with one of the band’s best and most iconic tracks, “Dazed and Confused.” Yet, the band is only now being sued over copyright infringement by one Jake Holmes who claimed he filed for the song’s melody two years prior to the album’s (and song’s) release. TMZ* has a snippet of both Holmes’ 1967 version, as well as Zep’s classic. The lyrics are…

Nihilism is stupid

There’s a site called anus.com. It’s not what you think. It’s an acronym for American Nihilist Underground Society. I shit you not. It’s an incredibly self-indulgent and even more ridiculous take on the “philosophy” of nihilism. Anyhow, according to the site one of the main cultures of nihilism is heavy metal. There are reviews of albums from just about every sub-genre under its umbrella. Hell, some of them might actually mean something if the prose…

It’s official: A7X drummer died of “accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol”

Fucking shocker, I know. Well, to everyone who was a part of reality, anyway. So, pretty much anyone who wasn’t a diehard fan. The best part? Commenter “Tiffany” who left, in part, this gem YESTERDAY on my post about The Rev’s death: “It still [sic] isn’t sure what his cause of death was, but you can’t say it was drugs. It probably was a natural cause.” [emphasis added] Yes, actually I can. I knew it…

New Kanye: “Power”

Supposedly this new leaked Kanye West song, “Power,” will appear on his upcoming Good Ass Job. (I linked to this usershare account because the song doesn’t stay on youtube long enough for anyone to fully stream it.) As for the song itself, it drives the African chant-influenced vocal hook into the ground before the end of the first minute. That said, there’s a King Crimson sample! And Kanye is rapping again! Lyrically, he’s still got…
