Century Media’s lawsuit against downloaders hits a snag

So in case you weren’t previously aware, the metal giant Century Media sued a few thousand people who downloaded the latest albums by Lacuna Coil and Iced Earth.  They were caught using torrents via their IP addresses.  Nothing new here, right? Well, now the judge in the case, U.S. District Judge Faith S. Hochberg, has thrown out the 943 subpoenas used against those that pirated the Lacuna Coil record.  The issue?  Well, those subpoenas were based on “John Doe…

Internet reacts to Avril-Chad wedding, hilarity ensues

So after the announcement of Avril and Chad Kroeger getting engaged, the internet decided to comment on the situation.  It’s some pretty funny stuff. Uproxx collected some of the best reactions – tweets, photoshops, whatever – together and I’ve included a few of my favorites. My favorite non-pic reaction comes from am incredibly clever tweet from Ben Paddon: That said, my favorite reaction – text or otherwise – is a photoshop that’s just so perfect, it’s like it came…

Dave Grohl: still the coolest rock star on Earth

So two pieces of news that make Dave the coolest and most damn-I-wanna-meet-him-est rock star in the world.  (In case, ya know, being one of the best live bands in all of music wasn’t enough.  Or putting out a fantastic  arena rock record 16 years into one’s career.) First: A recent Foo Fighters show in Ireland sparked over 100 noise complaints.  Nothing special, right?  Well, apparently, the concert could be heard from 12 miles away….

Dave Mustaine said something incredibly stupid (again)

I haven’t covered the ridiculous “insights” of Dave Mustaine as I have for another nut-job singer/guitarist, but that’s because what Mustaine says doesn’t usually draw the ire of the Secret Service.  Mustaine’s nonsensical babbling is just that – nonsensical.  It isn’t threatening or otherwise worrisome. This time, however, Mustaine took his (insane) view of reality to new heights of absurdity, reserved only for Scientologists and OJ Simpson jury. He apparently believes that the recent shootings…

LimeWire owes RIAA $72 Trillion. So says the RIAA.

The RIAA, in keeping with its quest to be as far from reality as possible, has come the conclusion that the (former) P2P service LimeWire owes it $72 trillion.  Yes, that’s with a ‘T’.  Seventy-Two.  Trillion.  Dollars.  That’s almost five times the U.S. debt.  Or as NME put it, “[m]usic industry group says it’s owed more than the entire world’s GDP in damages.” As you might imagine, the RIAA “likely has no hope” of actually…

Classical music is just as relevant and important as pop music (or, “How to Listen to Great Music” proves that Mozart is as cool as Lady GaGa)

What’s that old adage?  “When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me.”  Yeah, well in this case, my assumption didn’t hurt anyone.  In hindsight, it was a tad lazy – and perhaps made an ass outta me – but certainly not harmful in any way. Here’s the thing: I got an email from ZME’s esteemed editor and founder Tibi asking me if I’d have any interest in reviewing a book called…

New Gaslight Anthem: “45”

The Jersey punks are back with the first single from the upcoming fourth record, Handwritten.  The band tells Rolling Stone that they “wished to return to the driving punk rock that ignited” their early work. True to their word, the song’s a little heavier (relatively speaking, of course) than anything on 2010’s American Slang.  I’d argue that “45” fits between Slang and its predecessor The ’59 Sound, both the album and title track of which…

Ted Nugent meeting with Secret Service because….well, The Nuge is a moron

So Ted Nugent, everyone’s favorite right-wing has-been musician, said something stupid.  Doesn’t seem that newsworthy.  Or something that the Secret Service would look into. Mostly, that’s the case.  The man could reasonable be called mentally unstable.  So it shouldn’t really be a shock that he said something the SS interpreted as potentially threatening to President Obama.  And I quote… I’ll tell you this right now: if Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I…

New Music Round-up: Soundgarden, Torche and Kanye West

Holy hell, has it been quite a six-day run for new music.  New tracks from Soundgarden,  Torche and Yeezy all came out since the middle of last week. First up, the reunited grunge gods Soundgarden put out a single from the forthcoming Avengers Assemble album (the soundtrack to the Avengers film) called “Live to Rise.”  I was initially excited cause, ya know, it’s fucking Soundgarden.  It is, sadly, simply meh: a do-nothing riff over the…
