Opeth, live @ The Monarch, Austin, Texas – 16.10.08. Photo by HeadovMetal. Opeth, and their future tour mates Enslaved, have both delivered same of the best new metal material of the past year, in the form of “Watershed” and “Vertebrae”, respectively. Fans of the bands, and good metal alike, should be happy to know the two will be playing together on the same stage, as they just recently mapped a pretty extensive tour. The tour…
Hot Streaming: Arcade Fire – ‘Lenin’ (new song)
If you enjoyed Arcade Fire’s Burning Bridges from a few weeks ago, here’s another new/rare song from the band. “Lenin” (originally titled “When Lenin Was Little”) was recorded for the increasingly awesome indie compilation Dark Was The Night, that also includes songs from the likes of Bon Iver, My Morning Jacket, Beirut, Sulfjan Stevens, The National and more other popular indie acts. Lenin, although far from a stand out Arcade Fire track, is quite fun,…
The Coachella 2009 lineup
This year’s Coachella fest lineup just went live yesterday night, and from the looks of it, it just seems worth going to. Kinda. It’s actually kinda last year’s lineup, a cool balance between big names and indie small timers. Speaking of last year, if you were a bit mad My Bloody Valentine didn’t play Coachella ’08, despite the ever revolving rumors, you can rejoice as they’ll be one of the headliners for the last day….
New Animal Collective video: ‘My Girls’
OK, the video for Animal Collective’s latest single is far from new (almost a month old), but I just barely got around seeing it. Give me a slack. Anyway, I really love the vibe of the video, even though there’s nothing, at first glance, that makes the connection between the cartoony, acid trip animations and the song itself. Beats me. As long as I’m having fun with it, I don’t mind. Off the recently released…
Download: Black Lips – ‘Short Fuse’
Your favorite indie party animals/swamp rats, the Atlantian quartet Black Lips, are prepping the release of their upcoming latest LP, “200 Million Thousand.” The band’s last studio effort, Good Bad Not Evil, was packed with loads of Southern canon run fun, and, from the looks of it, 200 doesn’t sound any lower, quality and fun-wise. The first single is called “Short Fuse” and it just got released and offered for free download today. Hectic vocals…
R.I.P. Billy Powel, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s keyboardist
This just came in – Billy Powell, long time keyboardist and key player for the hard rock Southerners, Lynyrd Skynyrd, was found dead recently, in his Jacksonville, Florida residence. Death struck him at the venerable age of 56. Tour dates that were up ’till now scheduled for the upcoming months have been canceled and the following has been posted on the band’s website: “A Great Loss — Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy…
New N.A.S.A video – ‘Hip Hop’ (feat. KRS-One, Fat Lip, Slim Kid Tre)
The video just premiered yesterday, featuring the N.A.S.A together with KRS-One, Fat Lip and Slim Kid Tre in their low quality animated selves, rapping and tripping about. As for the song itself, suggestively dubbed “Hip-Hop,” it’s one hell of a ride! It’s fresh, up beat and fun. N.A.S.A. latest release, “The Spirit of Appolo,” is out Feb. 17. Also check out the following, equally insane, MP3: N.A.S.A & Kanye West & Santogold & Lykke Li…
New Andrew Bird video – ‘Fitz and the Dizzyspells’ (live @ David Letterman)
“Noble Beast”, Andrew Bird’s latest effort, just recently got out and boy is it a treat for fans and new ears alike. Just like most of his other records, the same, but unique at the same time. His real talent as a songwriter lies in being able to create a special, distinct atmosphere around each song, paying attention to every detail, such that a unique piece comes up every time. Last night, Andew was gracious…
Download: Heartless Bastards – ‘The Mountain’
Dayton, Ohio locals, The Heartless Bastards, form a garage rock band that impresses through it’s smooth combination of blues and retro ’70s rock, much like their fellow Ohians and label mates, The Black Keys. To be frank the band feels more like a solo project, as Erika Wennerstrom’s dominance can be felt through out their whole catalog. Actually for the new album, their third, called “The Mountain,” Erika made out a new band, surrounding herself…
New Mastodon Art Work + new single stream
Mastodon’s new album, “Crack The Skye”, is just a few couple of week away, but, even so, anticipation grows ever unbearable, especially with the annoyingly awesome teasers the band’s promo company do. Above is pictured the official art work for Crack The Skye, definitely too abstract and packed with symbolism for all of us to fully comprehend. An impaled bear walking over the globe, two twin Tsar genies (two Rasputins, more likely), levitating a globe…
